Typing & transcription

Improve typing accuracy through controlled dictation.

Dictation practice combines listening, working memory and keyboard execution. It provides a closer simulation of transcription than visual copy typing.

The exercise

Train listening, retention and keyboard execution.

A practical session tests listening, working memory retention, spelling and keyboard control together.

01

Choose a clean passage

Begin with familiar vocabulary and clear sentences. Unusual names and numbers can become separate drills later.

02

Type without reading ahead

Use typing mode and keep the source hidden. If you miss a word, leave a marker and rejoin the voice.

03

Compare locally

Select Check accuracy after the take. The comparison is performed in the browser; review the differences, not only the percentage.

A better review

Diagnose the source of each error.

The same score can hide several different problems. Label the cause before repeating.

Listening and pace

  • Omitted words after long phrases
  • Words lost while correcting an earlier mistake
  • Difficulty rejoining after a pause

Typing and language

  • Consistent key substitutions
  • Spelling or punctuation uncertainty
  • Names, dates and numbers entered incorrectly
Accuracy comparison has limits

Automated text comparison cannot judge meaning or professional transcription conventions. Review the actual differences. If punctuation is ignored, that does not make punctuation unimportant in formal work.

A simple progression

Change one practice variable at a time.

  1. Complete a short familiar passage at a comfortable target pace.
  2. Correct the transcription and note recurring error types.
  3. Repeat the same text and pace without editing during the take.
  4. Increase the WPM slightly, or introduce harder vocabulary, not both at once.

The target cadence is generated through your browser’s speech system. It may not match an externally timed recording exactly, so use the same device and voice when comparing sessions.

Useful beyond speed tests

Adapt the passage to the work.

The player does not provide a course or qualification, but it can support deliberate drills between lessons or assignments.

Transcription learners

Practise continuous capture, then apply the formatting and quality rules from your course.

Students

Use subject vocabulary to combine listening, recall and keyboard familiarity.

Professionals

Create short drills for names, technical terms or meeting language without uploading the passage to DictationFlow.

Recommended next step
